All Saints Catholic School
enjoys having a three octave set of Malmark Handbells, used for music
education beginning at the Fourth Grade level. Students learn to read music
and understand through hands-on experience what kind of team work and skills
are needed to perform a bell piece or music selection well.
The
bell choir program was founded more than 20 years ago by a former school
music teacher, Mrs. Vicki Clarke-Peck, who was
succeeded by our present teacher, Mr. Steven Meyer. Students in grades 4, 5
and 6 receive weekly instruction and practice time at the bells, and 7th and
8th grade students may audition for our Honor Boy's or Honor Girl's Bell
groups. The Honor Bell Groups perform at special school, parish or Diocesan
events each year, such as the Lillian Black Festival of the Arts, the Mother
Seton Awards, the Hayward Foundation Holiday Luncheon, and school graduation
ceremonies.
Because our school has been
a bell-ringing community, an annual bell festival for Elementary and Middle
School students is hosted at All Saints each Spring, with 160 students
typically participating. The participation in bell ringing is a part of the
school curriculum and something for which All Saints Catholic School is well
known in the Diocese of Oakland.
